Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her boyfriend, a police officer, with a car in January 2022, was back in court Friday to attend a hearing and discuss her defense attorney’s motion to dismiss the case.
Attorney Martin Weinberg argued for Read in court on Friday. Attorneys Alan Jackson and David Yannetti had previously argued that two of three charges against 44-year-old Read, including second-degree murder and hit-and-run, should be dropped after a mistrial in June.
Her lawyers told Judge Beverly J. Cannone that the jury reportedly agreed that Read was not guilty on two counts and that another trial against him would pose a risk of “double jeopardy.”
Prosecutors plan to retry Read in January. Cannone listened to arguments from both sides and said she would consider them without making a decision on Friday.

Read arrived at the Norfolk County Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusettson Friday afternoon surrounded by competing spectators: those who cheered her on and held signs reading “Free Karen” and “Framing,” and those who repeatedly chanted “Cop Killer” as she walked up the courthouse steps.

Jackson and Yannetti argued during the trial in June that the allegations against Read that she killed her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, were part of an elaborate cover-up and conspiracy investigation.
After a trial lasting several weeks and 26 hours of deliberations, the Norfolk County jury was deadlocked and Cannone declared the trial void on July 1.
Prosecutors argued during the trial that after a night of drinking on Jan. 28, 2022, an argument between O’Keefe and Read – a financial analyst – turned fatal when Read allegedly drove into O’Keefe with her SUV. Prosecutors further alleged that she left her boyfriend dying outside a Canton home during a northeast storm.
Authorities found his body on the front lawn of an influential family with close ties to Law enforcement and prosecutors.

Read’s defense claimed that the family who owned the home where O’Keefe was found dead in the snow on the morning of January 29, 2022, had framed her for his death in an elaborate cover-up.
The case has sparked a debate between Boston-area residents who blame Read for O’Keefe’s death and those who believe she is innocent.

“It’s become the Karen Read Show,” said O’Keefe’s brother Paul O’Keefe. said CBS Boston in July. “She walks through a crowd that cheers her on. She goes out in public, takes photos and signs autographs.”
“She lives her life as if nothing ever happened,” he said at the time.
The jury that presided over the trial in June was “deeply divided” by their “deeply held beliefs” and ultimately concluded that “consensus was not attainable,” according to the judge’s July notes.

“Despite our commitment to the duty entrusted to us, we are deeply divided by fundamental differences of opinion and spirit,” the jury wrote in its closing statement to the judge.
