Knights lose to Lincoln in 2024 season opener

The Rio Linda Knights football team started their 2024 season with a disappointing 41-13 loss to the Lincoln Fighting Zebras. While the final score may be disheartening, the Knights showed a promising performance, especially in the second half.

A sluggish first quarter, marked by missed tackles and a slow start, put the Knights in a significant defensive slump. However, they rebounded in the following quarters and held Lincoln to just two touchdowns. Despite a missed two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, the Knights were within striking distance of a closer game.

Interim coach Ralph Quijada deserves credit for leading the team to a competitive performance, especially given the challenges in the first quarter. Several players showed impressive skills, including running back Malachi Mosby and quarterback Cayden Lockling.

Going forward, the Knights need to address fundamental issues such as missed tackles, missed running routes and a lack of urgency on defense. These correctable errors will be crucial to improving their performance in the coming weeks.

Next week, the Knights have a chance to redeem themselves when they host the Placer Hillmen, ranked No. 10 in the SacBee regional prep football rankings. The Hillmen are coming off a convincing 42-20 win over No. 9 Casa Roble. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. for the juniors and 7 p.m. for the varsity.

As the season progresses, the Knights will look to build on their positive moments and address their weaknesses to achieve their goals.
