Kuwait experienced widespread power outages on Sunday as authorities tried to stabilize the country’s power grid amid extreme heat and increased energy demand. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the blackouts affected several areas, including residential areas, agricultural areas and industrial zones.
The outages were attributed to a technical fault in the fuel supply system, combined with rising energy consumption in temperatures of almost 50° Celsius. The outages affected six important industrial areas, three agricultural areas and parts of 31 residential areas.
Ministry calls on citizens to reduce electricity consumption
In response to the heatwave and rising electricity demand, the ministry has urged people to reduce their electricity consumption, especially during peak consumption hours between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The ministry also warned that there may be additional power outages in areas with the highest demand to stabilize the grid.
Extreme temperatures mean Kuwait relies heavily on air conditioning, putting additional strain on the power grid. Authorities hope that by controlling energy use, they can prevent major outages and maintain grid stability during the ongoing heatwave.
