Oni Press gave a first look at the upcoming Epitaphs from the Abyss #3, one of EC Comics’ revived titles. The issue features three standalone stories by Chris Condon and Charlie Adlard, Corinna Bechko and Jonathan Case, and Jay Stephens and Leomacs, each one another spooky tale in keeping with the ethos of the original comic publisher.
In the press release, Condon spoke about his and Adlard’s story. A repetition at the intersectionand explained:
“One of the greatest stories of crossroads in American culture comes not from an EC comic but from Delta Blues. Why did blues musician Robert Johnson, the first inductee into the entertainment industry’s most exclusive club, die at age 27? Was it due to a fateful crossroads encounter with a particularly diabolical person who made an offer you couldn’t refuse? Well, comic genius Charlie Adlard and I took a long look at this classic idea, turned it into an EC story, and, thanks to Charlie’s deft handling of the material, came up with something almost lyrical in execution – a description not often given to EC stories. But make no mistake – our story “A Crossroads Repetition” still contains that patented EC punch to the gut that we know, love, and look forward to in every issue of EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS and CRUEL UNIVERSE.”
Oni also gave a glimpse of the third issue’s covers, featuring illustrations by Lee Bermejo, Tom Fowler, Jay Stephens, and Rian Hughes. Those covers and the preview pages can be seen below.
Epitaphs from the Abyss #3 will be released in comic shops and on digital platforms on Wednesday, September 18th.
