Local creatives learn more about NASA’s iconic logo

NASA’s Glenn Research Center has contributed to nearly every NASA mission since the agency’s founding. These contributions extend beyond science and engineering to include the design of NASA’s iconic logo, affectionately known as the “Meatball,” and were developed in Cleveland at the lab that later became NASA Glenn by graphic artist James Modarelli.

This timeless brand symbol celebrated its 65th anniversary last month. To mark the occasion, NASA Glenn’s Office of Communications (OCOMM) hosted a Cleveland Creators Tour on July 10, welcoming creatives from the food, tourism, apparel and professional sports industries to the center. During the event, they learned more about NASA Glenn’s work and how to appropriately use NASA’s iconic logo. Like Modarelli, their creative interpretations could inspire a new generation of creatives, explorers and space lovers.

Center deputy director Dawn Schaible welcomed guests and gave an overview of the center. Aimee Crane, NASA’s merchandising and branding manager, then explained how to work with the agency to use NASA brand symbols. Tours of several of Glenn’s research facilities highlighted how Cleveland is advancing flight technology and exploring space.
