The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power The showrunners reveal the real reason why production moved out of New Zealand for season 2. Prime Video’s hit fantasy series is based on JRR Tolkien’s source material and was released in 2022. It tells the story of Galadriel (Morfydd Clark)’s fight against the rise of evil in Middle Earth during the Second Age. As with Peter Jackson’s popular trilogy, season 1 was filmed in New Zealand, but The Rings of Power Season 2, which premieres later this month, made the controversial decision to move production to the UK

In a recent interview with GQthe real reasons behind The Rings of Powers move from New Zealand is announced. According to showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne, New Zealand’s strict COVID-19 protocols played a role, as it simply wasn’t feasible to mount such a large production there. Second, Amazon was expanding its production capabilities in the UK at the time. However, according to the showrunners, these logistical reasons led to the show moving closer to Tolkien’s own work. Check out Payne and McKay’s comments below:

Payne: “Amazon was building up its production apparatus here in the UK and it’s one of their biggest shows. They wanted to bring everything under one roof.”

McKay: “We’re shooting in Windsor Great Park with thousand-year-old trees that he might have looked at and written about. It’s a different landscape, a different weather pattern. And all of that contributes to a kind of Middle Earth that’s even closer to the one readers imagine in the books.”
