Police were called to a fight and stabbing in the 200 block of South Brandywine Avenue, right next to a Speedway gas station, early Sunday morning.

Police said they found a man with a stab wound to the chest around 1:09 a.m. Authorities believe his injuries are serious and he was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he is believed to be in stable condition.

NewsChannel 13 spoke to Lieutenant Pete Montalto of the Schenectady Police Department about the incident.

“He was stabbed in the chest, which is obviously a very serious stab wound to the chest,” Montalto said. “Albany Medical Center was able to stabilize the victim and he is now in stable condition.”

Police were able to quickly locate and arrest a suspect: 27-year-old Marcus Jeffress of Schenectady.

He has been charged with first-degree assault and is being held in the Schenectady County Jail pending arraignment.

A neighbor told NewsChannel 13 that he was not surprised, as violence is common in the area, and said something needed to be done about it.
