Matt Vierling scores two runs to help the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Vierling hit an RBI double in the first inning and a game-winning single in the seventh to help the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.

Vierling’s single against White Sox relief pitcher Justin Anderson in the seventh inning scored Parker Meadows. One out later, Colt Keith singled home Riley Greene from second base to extend Detroit’s lead to 4-2.

Tigers relief pitcher Will Vest (3-4) got one out in the sixth inning and threw a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win.

Starter Chris Flexen and the White Sox set the record for consecutive losses by a team in games in which Flexen started, losing for the 19th time. The Brewers and Chris Capuano had a 19-game losing streak from May 13, 2007, to June 3, 2010.

The White Sox are 4-27 in the second half of the season and have the worst record in the MLB at 31-98.

Fraser Ellard (1-2) played one-third of an inning and lost, allowing one hit, one walk and two earned runs.

Flexen allowed two consecutive doubles from Greene and Vierling in the first inning, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Jace Jung opened the second inning with a double and scored on Dillon Dingler’s single to extend the Tigers’ lead.

Lenyn Sosa cut the Tigers’ lead with an RBI single in the second inning. Sosa also made a nice defensive play in the third inning, catching Spencer Torkelson’s ball in the outfield grass at third base and throwing Torkelson out at first base.

Flexen settled in and pitched six good innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks and going no-decision.

Korey Lee tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth inning against Tigers starter Keider Montero.

Montero allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.

TRAINING ROOM

Tigers: SS Javier Báez was placed on the 10-day injured list because of right hip and lumbar spine inflammation. Manager AJ Hinch said they would know more about the injury after Báez undergoes further tests.

White Sox: White Sox general manager Chris Getz said 3B Yoán Moncada will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte next week. He is scheduled to play Tuesday. Moncada has been on the injured list since April 10 with an abductor muscle strain. … RHP Michael Soroka pitched a live bullpen session Friday. He will head to Charlotte for a rehab assignment. Soroka has been on the injured list for just over a month with a right shoulder strain.

Tigers: LHP Tarik Skubal (14-4) will try to win his 15th MLB game on Saturday to move ahead of the pack. He currently leads the majors with a 2.49 ERA. The White Sox will send LHP Ky Bush (0-2) as their scheduled starter. In his third career start, he allowed one run on four hits in six innings at Houston. He was 7-4 with a 2.89 ERA between Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham.
