Meghan Markle just refuted one of her own claims about royal life

Royal Family

Meghan Markle has had a lot to say about the royal family since stepping down from her top royal office. However, at least one of the Duchess’s statements has been refuted by Meghan herself.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the royal family in 2020 after feeling they were not adequately protected from the media and public scrutiny – and it was damaging their mental health. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since settled into their homes in Montecito, California, and are living a quieter life, but still make frequent public appearances and build their own businesses and brands.

But Meghan once said something about royal fashion that suggested she wasn’t allowed to wear her preferred colors. And yet, since leaving the family, her outfits seem to directly contradict her standards.

Meghan Markle often wears neutral colors

During her time in the royal family, Meghan was often seen wearing neutral colors like beige, white, and navy blue. Of course, this was the exact opposite of Queen Elizabeth II, who was known for her love of pastel colors. But during an interview long after she left the family, Meghan made it seem like she only wore neutral colors because she couldn’t outshine any of the other senior royals.

“When I was in the UK, I rarely wore colour,” Meghan said in her Netflix documentary with Harry. “I wore a lot of muted tones. I also wore it so I could just go with the crowd. I’m not trying to stand out here. I don’t want to embarrass the family.”

Meghan continued: “As far as I know, you are never allowed to wear the same colour as Her Majesty at a group event. But then you shouldn’t wear the same colour as any of the other, older family members either.”

While this makes sense, Meghan is implying that her fashion sense was suppressed and she only dressed a certain way because she was so afraid of what the royals would think – but her outfits today paint a different picture. Despite leaving the family years ago, Meghan almost always wears neutral colors to events. The Duchess is rarely, if ever, seen wearing a bright outfit. She wore white to the ESPYs, beige to her recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, and almost exclusively wore neutral or dark colors to appearances with Harry during the Invictus Games.

Fashion experts expected Meghan Markle to wear bright colors outside of her royal life

Meghan has faced many challenges during her time as royal, and the impact these have had on her emotional and mental health is believable. However, the claim about muted fashion in the family is not conclusive, especially because Meghan continues to choose muted colors. It seems that this is just a fashion preference and not because she was afraid.

“It’s a little unexpected,” style expert Miranda Holder said in an interview with Express about Meghan’s fashion choices since leaving royal life. “After her statement, I think we all expected the Duchess to step out in a rainbow of bright colors and make the most of her newfound wardrobe freedom, but the opposite is the case.”
