Memphis-area man charged with online threats against Biden, Harris and Obama

Man charged with threatening the president, vice president and a former president

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz announced today that a Memphis-area man has been charged with threatening President Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama.

On July 27, 2024 Kyle Alton Hall, 37published numerous posts on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Specifically, in the posts he threatened to kill, assassinate, shoot and crash President Biden, assassinate Vice President Harris, and assassinate former President Obama.

In a federal indictment filed on August 20, 2024, Hall is charged with two counts of uttering threats against a sitting President and Vice President, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 871(a), and one count of uttering threats against a former President, in violation of Section 879(a)(1). Each count is punishable by up to five years in prison.

The United States Secret Service investigated this case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Will Crow of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s National Security and Civil Rights Division.

The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted in a due process of law.
