Memphis Wrestling (13.3.1982) Review | 411MANIA

-Originally aired on March 13, 1982.

-Your hosts are Lance and Dave.

-BREAKING NEWS: The AWA is not happy about last week’s Southern Tag Team Title change. The AWA must approve all title matches and this was done on the spur of the moment. Also, one of the conditions the men agreed to was a ten minute time limit and the AWA bylaws state that title matches must have a one hour time limit. Therefore, last week’s title change is void but instead of returning the belts to the ex-champions, in the interest of fairness there will now be a round robin tournament to determine the new champions and information on this will follow at a later date.

-The Gibson Brothers are upset about all the mess surrounding the Southern Tag Team Titles because they are now in the round robin.

GIBSON BROTHERS vs. NIGHTMARE & SPEED (with Jimmy Hart and Kenny Shane)

-But what’s the point? Jimmy announces that the people deserve a real reward, so the match goes to Bobby Eaton & Sweet Brown Sugar instead, and besides, Jimmy is so busy… that he decides not to stay out here for the match. Zuh?

GIBSON BROTHERS vs. SWEET BROWN SUGAR & BOBBY EATON (with Kenny Shane)

-Lance Russell waits anxiously for a dandy to open the game. The bell rings and Bobby Hill appears in a velvet tuxedo jacket.

– Anyway, Robert is squirming and dodging every attempt by Sugar to grab him. Eaton is tagged in and pulled down by the arm, while Lance now makes it clear that Jimmy’s whole thing of upstaging Eaton and Sugar was just his way of sugar-coating what happened, namely that Nightmare and Speed can’t make it to the TV studio because of a car breakdown.

-Sugar comes back and gets knocked down with a dropkick. Ricky tags in and applies a really tight looking wristlock. Everyone tags in and now Eaton is caught in the wristlock. Kenny Shane gives Robert a pool cue from the outside with his stick and that turns the tide. Heels attack Robert in a double attack with a tandem backbreaker.

-Heels stay on their backs and cut the ring in half. Ricky is so frustrated that he runs across the ring just to knock Eaton off the edge of the ring, but it’s no use as Eaton tags in and stops the hot tag with a chinlock. We soon end up with a pier-sixer and Eaton hurls Robert over the top rope in front of the referee, resulting in a disqualification. Good action that left us wanting more.

THE MONK AND THE ANGEL (with Kenny Shane) against JOE STARK and PAT HUTCHINSON

– A monk and an angel are a pretty natural pairing, so kudos for that booking. Kenny Shane is changing his appearance more and more every week to look like Jimmy Hart, and now the commentators have learned that he wants to be known as the “Kenny Hart Stalker.”

-Monk hugs Hutchinson with a bear hold and Angel knocks him down with a black glove punch in seconds and counts to three.

-Lance talks to Jerry Lawler, who once again holds the Southern Heavyweight Title after another rematch against Dutch. Jerry tells us that Norvell has challenged him to a fight, and again Norvell sets many conditions. No time limit, no disqualification. And Jerry is smart enough to know that “no disqualification” means the other members of the Midnight Express will certainly be at ringside. So from now on, Jerry Lawler will have someone in his corner to support him in his fights…

– And to everyone’s surprise, it’s former heel manager Danny Davis. And Lawler drops truth bombs all over the ring – Jimmy Hart felt threatened by the presence of another heel manager, so Jimmy signed him to a great deal to put on a mask, hide his identity, stop being a manager, and wrestle under the name “Nightmare”. So from now on, Danny Davis takes off the mask and will be Jerry Lawler’s manager, keeping an eye on the Midnight Express, Jimmy Hart, or anyone else who gets involved in scams. And Danny reveals, in case it wasn’t already obvious, that the car breakdown from earlier was a lie.

-By the way, one thing that fascinates me about this area and the fans…there is always absolute SILENCE in the studio during Lawler’s promos. In the WTBS studio, no matter who is there, you hear a constant stream of chatter and shouting. But the crowd always gives Jerry their undivided attention.

JERRY “The King” LAWLER (with Danny Davis) vs. GYPSY JOE (with Kenny, er, Hart, I think)

– Joe attacks before the bell, but Lawler has no chance and turns him off with an elbow and gets the three-count after about 30 seconds.

SUPERSTAR BILL DUNDEE vs. THE INVADER

-I don’t think this needs to be said – you’ve probably figured it out already – but “The Invader” is a masked guy who is exclusive to this area and is definitely no one else who has ever had that name. That’s another fascinating thing about this area: They just grabbed names and said “thanks, we’ll take that” without acknowledging the world outside the area.

-Dundee waist-locks Invader and takes him to the floor. Invader tries a backdrop, but Dundee turns it into a backslide for the third time, and somehow that was a two-minute match.

NORVELL AUSTIN vs DENNIS UPTON
-Norvell is all alone out there for some reason.

-Dropkick and a kick from Norvell. Forearms and a heavy punch from Norvell and a heavy headbutt take out Upton uneventfully.

-Bill Dundee is here for an interview, but Jimmy Hart comes out with the First Family and immediately drops to his knees to make Dundee an offer – to join the First Family. Dundee turns around and won’t even listen to the offer, so the Family attacks him 4 on 1, and eventually some faces come out to sweep him off the mat.

TIME RUN: DREAM MACHINE & CRAZY LUKE GRAHAM (with Kenny Hart) vs. RICK MCCORD & CHIEF THUNDERCLOUD
– FALL ONE: With seven minutes left in the hour of television, Dave explains that we could see five falls due to the Expiration of Time match rules, and given the pace of this week’s show, that’s not an absurd statement.

-McCord pulls Machine with his arm. Machine knocks McCord down and drops his leg. Graham tags in and delivers a slam and an elbow. Dream Machine rips McCord in the stomach. Thundercloud tags in and gets kicked right away, and a big elbow from Machine gets the win.
