Memphis Wrestling (20.3.1982) Review | 411MANIA

-Originally aired on March 20, 1982.

– Your hosts are Lance Russell and Dave Brown.

STEVE KEIRN vs INVADER
-Keirn works the leg as the commentators point out that Invader has black mesh over his mask’s eyes and it’s going to be hard to win if he can’t see Keirn.

-Keirn applies a front facelock, but Invader makes it to the ropes, only for Keirn to pull his leg out and apply a toehold. Wristlock takedown by Keirn, and the crowd is absolutely silent since the bell. It’s a good technical wrestling display, but they just don’t have anything to go on here.

-Invader tries to throw an elbow off the ropes. Keirn ducks and a German Suplex pinning combo finishes it for Keirn. As I said, dead crowd, but a pretty good “that’s wrestling” match.

STAN LANE & ROBERT GIBSON vs. BILL OWENS & ERNIE KIRKLAND
– And we must be in a hurry, because Keirn and Invader both storm out of the ring after the bell sounds, and the next four guys rush to the ring to start this match. We get a vague explanation that “Ricky can’t wrestle this week,” so Robert gets a new partner for just one match.

-Lane applies a side headlock on Owens. Gibson picks him up and applies his own side headlock then switches to a toehold. Kirkland is tagged in and his leg is worked over, good strategy for a “big man” as Lance calls him and it’s funny because by the standards of this area he’s big but he’s interchangeable with a million guys who have been squashed Wrestling Challenge. Sunset Flip by Gibson brings three.

-The house show promo video reveals that Bobby Eaton and Sweet Brown Sugar won the Oddball Tournament for the Southern Tag Team titles.

– Ricky Gibson is at the commentary table and explains that he broke his sternum a few days ago in a home match. His doctors have made it very clear to him that it is too dangerous to wrestle until he is healthy again. Therefore, he will be out of the ring indefinitely and will only eat soup until his chest pain stops.

BEAUTIFUL BOBBY EATON & SWEET BROWN SUGAR (Southern Tag Team Champions with Jimmy Hart) vs. ROY ROGERS & RICK MCCORD
-Champs take Rogers apart in their corner. Eaton hits Rogers too hard and he falls back into his own corner, allowing the tag. Eaton and Sugar drop McCord down with a double backdrop and continue to beat on him, but he escapes and Rogers gets beaten up even more. McCord tags back in and a backbreaker from Eaton & Sugar gets the win.

– We’re revisiting the “Winner Takes It All” music video from a few weeks ago, in response to thousands of fans from the Memphis area calling the station wondering if they had imagined that segment.

-Dutch is here and promises that he will get the belt back from the king once again.

-We go to the Mid-South Coliseum to see Lawler take the Southern Heavyweight Title back from Dutch. Dutch apparently takes a hard hit to the eye and they run with it, with Lawler messing around with the eye a bit before taking Dutch out cleanly with a back suplex and taking the title.

– Next on the injury report: Superstar Bill Dundee has suffered all kinds of shoulder injuries at once, and is out indefinitely. Plus, we get a tribute to Dundee with “The Way We Were.” Were those music videos filmed in an elevator?

STAN LANE vs. GYPSY JOE (with Jimmy Hart)

-Lane elbows Joe and shoves him. The trained feet come into play. Joe tries to neutralize it with a toehold, but Lane breaks free with an enziguiri. A neckbreaker from Lane gets the three-count.

THE MONK & THE ANGEL (with Jimmy Hart) vs. PAT HUTCHINSON & TOM MALEY

– Another one where after the last fight everyone quickly got out of the ring and everyone quickly went back into the ring.

-Angel bear hugs Hutchinson and drops him. Monk headbutts him and drops to his knee for three.
