Michigan man accused of embezzling his grandfather’s money

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – A Redford man is accused of stealing from his grandfather after being court-appointed his guardian, officials said.

Darius Nance, 33, of Redford, was charged Thursday in 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills with embezzling funds in the amount of $1,000 to $20,000 from a vulnerable adult, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced.

“Court-appointed guardians are entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting our most vulnerable citizens,” Nessel said. “My office will continue to hold accountable those who use guardianships to unlawfully enrich themselves.”

Nance’s grandfather was placed in the SKLD Bloomfield Hills care facility in October 2022, officials said. In February 2023, the Oakland County Probate Court appointed Nance as his grandfather’s guardian.

It is alleged that after assuming guardianship, Nance failed to make payments to the nursing home for his grandfather’s care, officials said. It is also alleged that Nance wrote numerous checks from his grandfather’s account, not for his grandfather’s needs, but for his own personal business dealings.

If convicted, Nance faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 or three times the value of the money or property involved (whichever is greater).

Nance is due back in court on September 3.
