Here are some safety tips for dealing with power outages from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Here in Michigan, from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, we have unpredictable weather.
Severe thunderstorms will move through southern Michigan on Tuesday amid extreme heat, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 60-70 mph in some areas. Be prepared; these storms could spawn tornadoes. (Find the latest weather radar here.)
Sometimes such weather can lead to widespread power outages.
Depending on your electric provider, you can check the current status of your power outage, the extent of the outage, the estimated restoration time, and more. Most Michigan residents have Consumers Energy or DTE Energy, but some regions in Michigan use other services; many of these are also listed below.

Use DTE Energy’s power outage map here. DTE reminds people to “please use caution and stay at least 25 feet away from downed power lines — assume they are energized and dangerous.” Report any power outage or downed line here.
Use Consumers Energy’s power outage map here. You can report downed power lines by calling 800-477-5050.
Use Indiana Michigan Power’s power outage map here. A small number of residents in southwest Michigan, near the Indiana border, use this service. Call 800-311-4634 for assistance.

Midwest Energy Cooperative power outage map

Lansing Board of Water and Light power outage map
Use the Lansing Board of Water and Light’s power outage map here. A small number of customers in the Lansing area use this service. To report an outage, call 877-295-5001 or visit the website.
Wisconsin Electric Power Company power outage map
