Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 allows players to land a plane and take a walk wherever and wherever they want. This incredibly ambitious feature promises to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 apart from all previous entries in the long-running franchise.

And while the game has been touted as the best and most realistic installment in the series since its release, it seems its developer underestimated the scale of its ambition. That’s suggested by a recent PC Gamer interview with Microsoft Flight Simulator lead Jorge Neumann, who revealed that the upcoming title will offer some truly unprecedented features. One of them is the ability to exit a plane (after landing) and just go for a walk somewhere. “You can literally walk your favorite mountain trail to your favorite cabin in the mountains, sit by the lake and watch the sunset,” Neumann explained.

The ability to walk around won’t just be limited to solid ground, as players will also be able to land on ships, Neumann said, presumably referring to vessels such as aircraft carriers. The industry veteran compared the experience of walking around on ships to “a first-person shooter environment.” This unprecedented level of world scale and complexity will be achieved largely by importing topographical data from Bing Maps. The previous series entry already did something similar, so much so that Microsoft Flight Simulator Players can find their real houses in the game.

You can literally walk down your favorite mountain trail to your favorite cabin in the mountains, sit by the lake, or watch the sunset.

But Asobo Studio has processed this data even more carefully for the upcoming sequel. In addition to a more detailed topography, Neumann also promised that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will deliver more realistic flora and fauna. That’s primarily thanks to the machine learning solutions used to populate the developer’s digital elevation map, which essentially acts like the game world’s elevation field. That process sometimes requires manual troubleshooting, such as removing a lush forest from a region where it doesn’t exist in the real world, Neumann explained. But overall, the technology promises to help MFS2024 to deliver a combination of scale, detail and immersion that no other flight simulation game has ever achieved.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will have a smaller installation size than MFS 2020

Another big technological leap concerns the way the game handles asset streaming, which now relies largely on the cloud. So instead of taking up 400-500GB of storage like its predecessor, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will only require “50GB or less.” It is currently unclear if the company plans to offer an option to install the entire game locally for those who have a patchy internet connection or prefer to play offline whenever possible. As with the vast majority of complex AAA simulation games, MFS2024 For an optimal gaming experience, a high-end CPU is likely required.
