Missing Massachusetts man found dead in South Carolina

The body of a Massachusetts man was found beneath a South Carolina home, just over a week after he was reported missing.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a home in Sea Pines, a 2,000-acre gated community in South Carolina, around 11:30 a.m. Monday for suspicious activity. During the investigation, the body of a man was found underneath the home.

South Carolina authorities believe the body is that of Stanley Kotowski, 60, of Massachusetts. He was on vacation when he disappeared from the South Sea Pines Drive area around 10:30 a.m. on August 16.

He was last seen wearing a dark or gray Coors Light T-shirt and dark shorts — possibly dark blue or black — and no shoes, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said. He also did not have his phone or wallet with him.

“He just walked out the door,” Jackie Kotowski, Stanley Kotowski’s wife, told WJCL 22 News. “He suffered from severe insomnia for about a month. He doesn’t have dementia. His anxiety just got worse and worse and he started to get a little paranoid.”

Kotowki’s body was found around 3:30 p.m. Monday and the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy Tuesday to determine the cause of death and positively identify the body, authorities said.
