Mitsubishi Power receives order for hydrogen-capable gas turbines in Saudi Arabia

Mitsubishi Power, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has secured a contract to supply gas turbines from Samsung C&T Corporation of Saudi Arabia.

Mitsubishi Power will supply its hydrogen-capable M501JAC combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) for a new industrial steam and electricity cogeneration power plant in Saudi Arabia.

The 475 MW combined heat and power plant is being developed by a consortium led by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Japanese power generation company JERA.

The plant will supply a petrochemical complex in Jubail in the Eastern Province and is owned by a special purpose vehicle in which TAQA holds a 51% stake and JERA 49%.

The power plant will supply electricity to the strategic expansion of Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP), a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies.

This project will involve one of the largest mixed-load steam crackers in the Gulf region.

The M501JAC turbine will be Mitsubishi Power’s first high-performance gas turbine to be assembled in Saudi Arabia, at Mitsubishi Power Saudi Arabia’s assembly center in Dammam.

The 17,200 m² facility not only assembles turbines, but also maintains key components.

Mitsubishi Power’s JAC gas turbine is designed to blend hydrogen with natural gas and provides operational flexibility and fast start-up times to the SATORP strategic expansion power plant.

The turbine will contribute to a stable, low-carbon electricity supply and is an essential part of Saudi Arabia’s industrial expansion and decarbonization efforts.

Mitsubishi Power has also entered into a long-term service agreement with the consortium led by TAQA and JERA, which includes the provision of parts, repairs and services to ensure the continued high performance and reliability of the equipment.

Khalid Salem, President of Mitsubishi Power Middle East & North Africa, said: “We are proud to partner with TAQA and JERA on this landmark project, which will play a central role in the Kingdom’s efforts to accelerate its economic growth and achieve its decarbonization goals in line with Saudi Vision 2030.”

“Today we reach a new milestone on our growth path with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“By deploying Mitsubishi Power’s state-of-the-art CCGT (combined cycle gas and steam turbine) technology, assembled locally in the Kingdom for the first time, we are accelerating our ability to deliver clean, reliable and efficient power generation solutions that help our customers power communities in Saudi Arabia and the wider region.”
