MLGW officially supplies xAI with electricity while environmental law firm investigates whether the plant has permits for turbines

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Elon Musk’s Memphis supercomputer is now powered by 50 megawatts of power from Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW).

The utility confirmed Monday that it is now supplying power to the xAI facility in the old Electrolux building.

The official confirmation came as several environmental groups raised concerns about xAI’s Bluff City project.

The Southern Environmental Law Center has sent a letter to the Shelby County Health Department asking for assistance in determining whether xAI’s installation of at least 18 gas-burning turbines was done without the required air permits.

The group claims the move could pose a threat to Memphis’ air quality, which already exceeds health standards set by the EPA.

“When we first heard about these turbines, we were concerned that they were emitting a lot of pollutants that were depleting the ozone layer,” said attorney Patrick Anderson. “And we wanted to learn more about it, so we went to the health department, but they had virtually no records of these turbines.”

Both Tennessee state regulators and the EPA received this letter.

The Southern Environmental Law Center says it is hoping for a response or investigation regarding the approval of xAI’s supercomputer.
