Mohammad Sabaaneh wins EWK Award – The Daily Cartoonist

This year’s EWK Prize goes to Palestinian cartoonist Mohammad Sabaaneh, who draws for the Middle East Monitor (MEMO). As this year’s winner, he will be attending the annual Lakes International Comic Art Festival in north-west England in September to receive the award.

“This award is not for me, it is for all Palestinians,” says Mohammad Sabaaneh. “I am delighted to be announced as the winner of the prestigious 2024 EWK Prize. Known for recognizing excellence in the field of political cartooning, this award marks a significant milestone in my career and is a powerful testament to the global recognition of Palestinian art and its profound role in resistance and cultural expression.”

The EWK Prize was established in 2000 to honour artists working in the spirit of Swedish political cartoonist Ewert Karlsson. The prize includes a cash prize of SEK 10,000 and a plaque designed by sculptor Thomas Qvarsebo.

Mohammad is the author of two books, Palestine in black and white And Strength born from dreams: My story is Palestine.
