Morning Briefing: Joey Votto retires from baseball

Good morning, Mets fans!

On Wednesday, one of the greatest first basemen of the 21st century officially hung up his boots. In an Instagram post thanking everyone who helped him throughout his career, longtime Red Joey Votto ended his career. Votto played all 17 major league seasons in Cincinnati since being called up in 2007, earning six All-Star appearances, a Gold Glove Award and an MVP title.

Votto was a wizard at the plate and always found a way to get on base. During his prime, he was virtually guaranteed to maintain a batting average above .300 by the end of the season, and he was a walk machine, leading the NL in OBP seven times. Although he signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2024 season, he never made the majors this year and will finish his career as a Red.

It was another exciting day in Flushing on Wednesday. As if Monday’s ending wasn’t exciting enough, the Mets had even more to offer on Wednesday. Although Sean Manaea pitched seven solid innings, he left the game with the final run on base to tie the game. But Jesse Winker was there to save the day. Winker hit his first home run as a Met over the left outfield wall in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mets a 4-3 victory over the Orioles that clinched the series victory over the O’s. After going 5-4 during their home opener, the Mets now return to the West Coast to face the Padres and Diamondbacks. Luis Severino (8-6, 3.91 ERA) will be on the mound at 9:40 p.m. Thursday night, facing Padres ace Dylan Cease (12-9, 3.46 ERA) to open the four-game weekend series in San Diego. The Mets are currently 1.5 games behind the Braves for the third wild card spot.
