NASCAR qualifying results: Richmond Cook Out 400 starting order, title contender takes pole

Denny Hamlin took his third pole position of the season on Saturday at Richmond as NASCAR returned from the Olympic break.

The experienced rider barely made it to the final qualifying round – he was the slowest of the qualifiers and was close to being eliminated – before hitting back in his final run.

Hamlin set a time of 22.850 seconds (118.162 miles per hour) on the 1.2-kilometer track, giving him a lead over some of this season’s best drivers ahead of Sunday’s race.

Chase Elliott, second in the overall standings, set the fourth fastest time, while third-place Tyler Reddick could only qualify in tenth place and points leader Kyle Larson did not even make it to the final round, finishing in 15th place.
