Nearly 3,000 customers in El Paso were affected by power outages on Wednesday afternoon

Nearly 3,000 customers in central and southern El Paso were without power Wednesday afternoon.

According to El Paso Electric’s outage map, several outages were reported in El Paso. The largest occurred in downtown, near Montana and Trowbridge, and affected 1,995 customers.

The second largest outage was reported in south central near Alameda Avenue, affecting 766 customers.

The power supply was restored around 2:30 p.m.

El Paso Electric officials said Mylar balloons entered one of their substations, causing the power outage.

Mylar balloons are made of metallic material that can cause a short circuit when they come into contact with power lines or substations, ultimately leading to equipment failure. EPE advises customers to always keep Mylar balloons tied up and dispose of them properly rather than releasing them into the sky.
