Nebraska Public Power District raises awareness of electrical safety at State Fair

GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska (KOLN) – South of the Heartland Events Center, children wearing gloves and hard hats race through an obstacle course that mimics the tasks of a lineman. It’s just one of the fun activities the Nebraska Public Power District has set up at the Nebraska State Fair.

Their goal is to teach children electrical safety and how electricity works.

“We actually have technicians doing demonstrations. We can create pretty good arcs and sparks,” Schulte said. “It’s really about bringing out the best of public power so everyone can learn about it.”

The booth also features plug-in circuits that children can assemble with the help of educators who talk about the importance of Nebraska811, the hotline to call before you dig.

“We also have some VR headsets and those are always a big hit with the kids,” Schulte said. “They can actually see inside the Cooper Nuclear Power Plant where fuel is being turned off.”

On the first day of the State Fair, the Southern Public Power District conducted a live demonstration near the NPPD information booth.

“So we’re going to show what electricity can do, what not to do and – if you’ve never seen one – what an arc flash looks like,” said Jim Piper, a foreman from Clay County.

Live performances begin on the hour next to Cactus Jacks. The last day of shows is the second Saturday of the Nebraska State Fair.
