New express lanes will open on a section of Freeway 10 before Labor Day weekend

Just in time for Labor Day weekend, 10 new express lanes will be opened for motorists on Freeway.

The lanes will run 10 miles from the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line at Etiwanda Avenue to east of the 15 Freeway. There will be two express lanes in each direction.

After four years of construction, the lanes are expected to be opened on Wednesday evening at 10 p.m.

“I think the public has shown incredible patience during this construction as we’ve tried to accomplish a very complex feat of engineering while maintaining traffic,” said Tim Watkins, a spokesman for the San Bernardino Transportation Authority.

Drivers can either obtain a FasTrak transponder to pay the toll or use the lanes and pay the toll online within five days.

The district states that an average of 265,000 drivers travel on Autobahn 10 every day and that the new lanes will help relieve traffic jams.

In two further construction phases, the length of the express lanes will later be extended to a total of 53 kilometers.

“This is a big deal because I-10 has nearly 300,000 vehicles a day,” Watkins said. “And during peak times, it can be very difficult to get through – and it’s unpredictable. Giving people an option when it matters most is a pretty cool proposition that we can make, and I hope people will experience the benefits sooner rather than later.”
