New installation now open at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe

The inspiration for the exhibition comes from science fiction and is out of this world.

SANTA FE, NM – Meow Wolf unveiled the newest installation at the House of Eternal Return, now available to explore in Santa Fe.

The Necro Techno Flesh Complex is “a fully immersive permanent installation” and the brainchild of New Zealand-born artist Jess Johnson.

“At the Necro Techno Flesh Complex, Johnson’s carefully hand-drawn worlds come to life in three dimensions, transforming the static into the dynamic. The installation is a sensory experience that draws visitors into a reality loop where the lines between imagination and reality blur. The intricate mosaics and hand-crafted columns retain a human quality that Johnson believes is essential to creating a world that feels alive,” said a spokesperson for Meow Wolf.

The installation combines 2D drawings, 3D environments and digital animations. According to Meow Wolf, this makes Johnson’s surreal worlds “a tangible, all-encompassing experience for visitors.”

“When I visited Meow Wolf, I felt like I was traveling back in time to my childhood,” Johnson said. “It was a strange kind of interaction. I wasn’t really in the moment, but I was imagining how I would react to the experience as a child.”

Johnson added: “Necro Techno Flesh Complex is an enigmatic mixture of words that have no obvious meaning.” She said she was inspired by the post-apocalyptic novel Riddley Walker, in which a language is shattered and reassembled into a new form.

Johnson spent a year in the Roswell Artist In-Residence Program. This year, she is returning to Roswell to create a “more permanent base” after traveling the world.

“I want to make New Mexico my home,” Johnson said. “A year in Roswell was the longest I’ve spent in one place, and I wasn’t ready to leave. The landscape and the small community sparked something really good and peaceful in me.”
