New Jersey power outage live tracker: Thunderstorms sweep across state, leaving thousands in the dark

Thunderstorms Sunday evening left more than 10,000 utility customers without power across the Garden State.

The National Weather Service had previously issued a severe weather warning for the entire state until 10 p.m., and some areas were under temporary thunderstorm and flood warnings with possible gusts of up to 70 mph.

A flood warning is also in effect until 2 a.m. Monday for parts of 17 counties: Bergen, Northwest Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, West Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Salem Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.

NJ.com’s Power Outage Tracker, which monitors outages at the state’s four largest utilities, showed more than 8,000 outages around 6:45 p.m., and by 7 p.m. the number had risen to more than 10,000.

The latest figures and affected areas can be found in the tracker below.

The storms capped a Sunday when the New Jersey coast was battered by gale-force waves from Hurricane Ernesto – still in the Atlantic after making landfall in Bermuda – and red flags were posted on many beaches, prohibiting swimming.
