New Order concert in Cardiff cancelled due to wind warning

A New Order performance was cancelled for “health and safety reasons” after a weather warning was issued.

The band was scheduled to play at Alexandra Head near the Cardiff Bay Barrage on Thursday evening.

Although Friday’s weather warning also covers north Wales, organisers said the cancellation was due to “extreme weather, including strong winds”.

Storm Lilian will bring strong winds between 05:00 and 11:00 BST on Friday.

Tim Burgess, lead singer of the Charlatans, one of the opening acts, said the band was devastated by the cancellation.

On X, formerly Twitter, he posted: “The weather is clearly the reason. All work that was due to start in the early hours of the morning must be postponed – the safety of everyone working must come first.”

“All bands had representatives involved at every stage.”

The weather warning applies to Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

The Met Office said that while there was some uncertainty about the details, “very strong winds are likely to develop, with gusts in the range of 50 to 60 miles per hour.”

The Bay Series, the event organizer, apologized for the inconvenience and said customers would automatically receive a refund.

Dermot Owens, 54, from Belfast, said he received a message about the cancellation as he got off the train.

“I also had VIP tickets, so we would have been right at the front. But we’re getting our money back – but that’s life.”

“I saw a few other people on Facebook who had booked flights from America and a non-refundable hotel and I feel very sorry for them.

“They don’t play very often, maybe once every two years? I’ve never seen them before so I was very excited. I’m very disappointed but life is too short to be upset about things like that.”
