New passenger car registrations: +0.2% in July 2024; battery-electric 12.1% market share – ACEA

In July 2024, new passenger car registrations in the EU saw a slight increase (+0.2%), with mixed results in the region’s four main markets: Italy (+4.7%) and Spain (+3.4%) recorded moderate increases, while the French (-2.3%) and German (-2.1%) markets recorded declines.

Seven months in 2024New car registrations rose by 3.9%, reaching more than 6.5 million units, the result of a low comparison base. The bloc’s largest markets all showed positive but modest developments. Spain (+5.6%), Italy (+5.2%), Germany (+4.3%) and France (+2.2%) all recorded increases.

New car registrations in the EU by drive source

In JulyIn 2017, battery-powered electric cars accounted for 12.1 percent of the EU car market, down from 13.5 percent the previous year. Hybrid electric vehicles increased their market share from 25.5 percent to 32 percent. The combined share of petrol and diesel cars fell from 50 percent to 46 percent.

Electric cars

In July 2024Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) fell by 10.8% to 102,705 units, with their overall market share falling to 12.1% from 13.5% last year. Despite increases in Belgium (+44.2%), the Netherlands (+8.9%) and France (+1%), the decline in Germany (-36.8%) could not be offset. From January to July, 815,399 new battery electric cars were registered, corresponding to a market share of 12.5%.

Registrations of plug-in hybrid cars fell last month (-14.1%), although Germany saw an increase of 3.2%. In July, plug-in hybrids accounted for 6.8% of the total car market with 57,679 units sold, compared to 7.9% a year earlier.

Hybrid electric vehicles recorded growth in July, with car registrations increasing by 25.7% to 273,003 units. All four largest markets for this segment recorded double-digit increases: France (+47.4%), Spain (+31.5%), Germany (+22.4%) and Italy (+17.4%). This growth pushed the market share of hybrid electric vehicles up from 25.5% in July 2023 to 32%.

Petrol and diesel cars

In July 2024Petrol car sales fell by 7%. Modest growth in key markets such as Italy (+3.8%) and Germany (+0.1%) could not offset declines in France (-22.6%) and Spain (-12.5%). Petrol cars now account for 33.4% of the market, compared to 35.9% in July last year.

The diesel car market recorded a decline of 10.1%, leaving the market share at 12.6% last July. While Germany recorded a moderate increase of 1.4%, other major markets such as Italy (-24.6%), France (-23.9%) and Spain (-11.6%) saw significant declines.
