New traffic light at intersection in northwest Fresno to improve safety

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Residents and local politicians say the impact of a new traffic light in northwest Fresno will change their lives.

The new traffic lights are intended to reduce dangerous driving while improving recreational opportunities.

With the push of a button, the traffic light at the intersection of Audubon Drive and Del Mar Avenue in northwest Fresno was activated.

Supporters say it is an important step to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, including those heading to the San Joaquin River.

“With the installation and now activation of the traffic light, we are celebrating a milestone in improving safe access to the River West-Eastern Trail Extension Project,” said Kari Daniska of the San Joaquin River Conservancy.

Some residents of the area have been waiting for this moment for 15 years because now they can cross this intersection safely.

The need was clear to residents of the Woodward Park area and local politicians.

In January 2022, an experienced cyclist was hit and killed just a few minutes away on the same road.

“What we’ve found over the years is that unfortunately, people who drive on Audubon are using it as a highway and in some cases driving at highway speeds. So something had to be done beyond enforcement and education,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.

Kritisne Walter is one of those who supported the traffic light coalition.

“This light and the fact that it is designed to stay red until you approach it will give us a greater sense of safety in our community and I think it will be great. I can’t wait for my grandchildren to come and ride their bikes,” Kristine explained.

The City of Fresno is still working on a comprehensive traffic study for the district to analyze design options along the busy corridor.

This study should be completed and shared with the public by fall as efforts to make Audubon Drive safer and more accessible continue.
