New York Giants 14, Detroit Lions 3

The New York Giants got off to a positive start to their preseason game on Thursday, beating the Detroit Lions 14-3 at MetLife Stadium. As in many preseason games, neither of their two regular players played, so the reserves were the stars of Thursday night’s game in New York.

The Giants must be pleased with the performance of their primary backup running backs on Thursday night. While likely starter Devin Singletary had the evening off, Tyrone Tracy Jr. And Eric Gray showed an exceptionally good performance in the first half. Gray averaged 12.25 yards per touch and was responsible for over 50% of New York’s offense in the first half, while Tracy forced five missed tackles and recorded three first downs on five possessions.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

The aforementioned Gray put on an electrifying performance during his time on the field, finishing with four carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns — most of which came on an impressive 48-yard touchdown run in the second quarter — as well as four pass catches for 46 yards and a forced missed tackle. The touchdown run may get most of the attention, but Gray’s ability to catch balls could be the key to him playing a real role in New York’s offense. Given the way New York used its running backs on Thursday night, the 2023 fifth-round pick appears to be lagging behind Singletary And Tracy on New York’s depth chart, but Thursday night’s performance keeps him in the running to be the primary backup running back.
