The Pittsburgh Steelers will reduce their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 27, but that’s not the end for general manager Omar Khan and Co.
Once every team’s roster is trimmed, teams will begin to search the waiver list for players who can help them. There will also be plenty of new faces on the free agent market, giving teams another opportunity to fill gaps.
So which players will be placed on the waivers list and which will go to free agency? That depends on the player’s length of service in the NFL.
Players with at least four accumulated seasons in the league go directly into free agency after their release and can sign with any team. Players with three or fewer accumulated seasons in the NFL are subject to waivers.
Teams have until noon ET on Wednesday, August 28th to make a claim for players placed on the waivers list. Any players who make it through the waivers list will become free agents, where they can sign with any team. And once the first waiver period is over on Wednesday, teams will put together their practice squads.
The Steelers have at least a few positions they could fill, including wide receiver and cornerback, so expect Pittsburgh to be active in the next few days.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at the Steelers’ waiver order situation heading into Wednesday. The current order is based on the 2024 NFL Draft order through Week 3 before reverting to 2024 records and is updated weekly.
