Notes from the last training before the 1st warm-up game

Alec Pierce: Player of the day

Alec Pierce was the first team offensive target and was literally the first target on every single series. He had 3 catches for 1 TD and a huge deep catch to start the day. He and Anthony Richardson put on an aerial performance that wowed spectators with a strong contested touchdown, a key 1st down conversion and the aforementioned deep throw.

With Alec Pierce competing with rookie AD Mitchell and Josh Downs injured, Pierce’s big day gives him a nice role to start this season.

Anthony Richardson: Efficient Day

Richardson had a very precise day of practice, hitting his top three wide receivers three to five times each and throwing a nice touchdown to Sermon. He even ran a ball in and showed efficient rollouts. After yesterday’s slide, the move that caught the attention of Colts fans today was a pump fake before scoring his rushing touchdown.

Rest days for veterinarians:

4-man rotation at safety

Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas II and Julian Blackmon have all been heavily looked at as safety on the 1st team, rotating in both free and strong positions. The starting spot alongside Blackmon is still unclear, but at the moment it looks like Ronnie Harrison has slipped down the rankings for this practice.

Ronnie did come in with the 1s for a series at the end of the day, but the top 3 had the most snaps among the starters that day. The safety duo from the 2022 draft could compete for starting snaps again this season.

Hard day for Young Corners

While the Colts’ WR units have been successful, the cornerbacks have struggled to keep up. Both Dallis Flowers and Jaylon Jones have had rough days, getting beat both early and late on their routes and struggling to contest catches. With Brents out today, the rest of the outside starting CBs have been unable to keep up against the Colts’ WR trio. Even DJ Montgomery has been in action with some nice YACs on the 2nd team.

Kenny Moore II: Defensive play of the day

Kenny Moore II can’t stop making plays. The only blemish on Richardson’s day today was an interception by the veteran nickel CB. Kenny jumped a route and made a jumping INT, much to the delight of his defensive teammates.

The impact of the experienced cornerback on this young cornerback room cannot be underestimated.
