During his 26-year naval career, he served on the USS Key West, a fast attack submarine based at Pearl Harbor. From 1997 to 2003, the Key West completed three deployments to the Western Pacific, two of them under war conditions. His team responded to the September 11 attacks on our country and fired 27 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Iraq.

In 2003, he undertook his first shore assignment as a damage control and firefighting instructor at Pearl Harbor. During this time, he met Molly Wynn and they married in 2004. With Molly by his side, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 2006.

In 2007, Anthony returned to sea on another Pearl Harbor-based submarine, the USS Bremerton, completing a deployment to the Western Pacific and earning a promotion to Senior Chief Petty Officer.

After being away from home for 15 years, Anthony and Molly returned to Washington in 2011, where he served as Senior Enlisted Advisor at Nuclear Weapons Detachment Bangor until he was appointed Submarine Ordinance Limited Duty Officer in 2012.

In 2013, Anthony was promoted to Ensign Read and began his career as a Mustang, an officer in the Navy who has risen from the ranks of the Navy’s enlisted personnel without a break from active service.

Following his promotion, Ensign Read became assistant weapons officer on the USS Pennsylvania (blue crew), a position he held until 2017.

Anthony leaves behind his wife Molly, his son Eli, his mother Linda Read, his uncle Jim Read, his in-laws George and Jolyn Wynn, and numerous other family members in Washington State and Wyoming.

In Anthony’s memory, encourage open dialogue about addiction and mental health among your family, friends, and community, and make it normal to seek help. Also, when you see a veteran, say “Thank you for your service.”
