Obituary for William Smith (1939 – 2024) – Latrobe, PA

William J. Smith, 84, of Latrobe, formerly of Ligonier, died Monday, July 29, 2024, at St. Charles Hospital, Bend, OR. Born November 4, 1939, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John M. and Margaret (Ratay) Smith. William was a member of St. Cecilia Church, Whitney, and a long-time active member of Holy Trinity Church, Ligonier, where he served as Eucharistic Minister. Prior to his retirement, he had a long career in banking. He was also employed and served on the board of directors of Mom’s House, Inc. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Faith in Action. William enjoyed fishing, walking, vacations and time spent with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Smith, and a son-in-law, Roger Wagner. William is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary (Matthews) Smith of Latrobe; three children, Sandy Wagner of Bethel Park, Sheri Slezak and her husband Tony of Latrobe, and William E. Smith and his wife Christine of South Lake Tahoe, CA; one sister, Lorraine Bell; six grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Sarah Slezak (Erin), Julie McLuckie (William), Emily Wagner, Jeff Wagner and Michael Slezak; and one great-grandson, Conor McLuckie. There will be no public wake. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ligonier, with the Reverend Anthony Carbone as celebrant. Urn interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Mom’s House Inc., 1325 Franklin St., Johnstown, PA 15905 or Faith In Action, 428 Main St., Latrobe, PA 15650.
