2:00 a.m. EST: Women’s Marathon

The starting shot is fired and the women’s marathon officially begins.

Just two minutes into the race, Fiona O’Keefe has fallen back and is now trailing the entire field. The show’s commentators say she has probably been battling an injury recently, although the cause is still unknown.

O’Keeffe is not alone. After less than two kilometers, several other runners are far behind the field.

A large leading group reaches the 5 km mark in 17:24, with Eunice Chebichii Chumba being the first athlete to cross the timing mat.
