One of the best comic book movies is now on Netflix. Here’s why you should stream it

Netflix recently added several series from AMC and AMC+, including Dark Windsan acclaimed drama that has risen up the list of most popular series on Netflix. For comparison: preacher has not yet made a similar impact on Netflix, even though Garth Ennis, the co-creator of the hit Prime Video series, worked on the series. The boys.

Ennis and the late comic artist Steve Dillon created preacher as an adult comic series for DC Comics’ Vertigo series from 1995 to 2000. Several attempts, preacher into a film failed, and even HBO gave up on it before Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg – who then set about The boys — joined the project and developed it with Sam Catlin for AMC.

preacher never reached a Walking dead-sized audience on AMC, but the show had the chance to tell a complete story over four seasons, running for 43 episodes. That alone makes the show very binge-worthy. But for the uninitiated, here are the four reasons why you should watch it. preacher on Netflix in August.

The story is incredibly wild

Dominic Cooper’s Jesse Custer is the title character of preacherbut he is not a devout man of God. During a crisis of faith, Jesse becomes possessed by Genesis, a descendant of a demon and an angel, which gives him the power to verbally command almost any living being. Armed with the word of God, Jesse, his ex-girlfriend and now murderer Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga), and her new boyfriend, a centuries-old Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), embark on the road trip of a lifetime to find God and force him to return to Heaven.

The first season takes time to get to this point, as Jesse learns of his newfound power and tries to use it to bring people closer to God. Jesse’s faith turns to anger when he learns that the Almighty has given up on creation. Since God is still omniscient, he puts a number of obstacles in their way, including the Grail, a secret cult/religious order that plans to overthrow the world’s governments by using the last descendant of Jesus Christ as a puppet ruler.

This is all more of a black comedy than a straight drama. We haven’t even touched on the attempts to escape from hell and the other digressions that preacher starts. Suffice it to say, this is no ordinary show.

Dominic Cooper delivers a convincing performance

Marvel fans may recognize Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark Captain America: The First Avenger and tracking Agent Carter TV series. Cooper was primarily a film actor when he was preacherand it is not difficult to understand why he liked the role of Jesse so much. While the events of preacher Jesse is sometimes made into a farce, but he is always taken seriously. Jesse comes from an abusive background and is haunted by the murder of his father. He is well aware of his personal shortcomings, but Jesse is genuinely trying to be a good preacher before his faith is shaken by God’s abandonment.

Tulip and Cassidy are in the spotlight in this series, but it is still Jesse’s show and his story that preacher from start to finish. Cooper’s performance is convincing and he is able to convey the show’s comedic and dramatic moments equally well.

The supporting characters are hilarious and tragic

There is no shortage of characters in this series, sometimes there are too many players on the field. But one of preacherThe strength of The Last Man lies in its supporting cast. Gilgun’s Cassidy is particularly good as one of the show’s most comical and tragic characters. Cassidy tries to be a good friend to Jesse, but ends up falling in love with Tulip and disappointing the people he loves most. He almost can’t control himself.

Eugene Root (Ian Colletti) is largely separated from most of the main cast in the series, but represents one of Jesse’s original sins. After a botched suicide attempt, Eugene is horribly scarred and shunned by the locals of his town. Jesse tries to help Eugene find acceptance before accidentally sending the boy to Hell in a moment of anger. Eugene is such a good-natured guy that Hell hardly knows what to do with him, and that leads in some interesting directions that are both comical and tragic.

The first season of the series also announces the introduction of the cowboy (Graham McTavish) and even gives him the name of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven Character William Munny. Unlike most of the other characters, the cowboy’s backstory is portrayed as pure tragedy before the show reveals his transformation into the Saint of Killers, Jesse’s most fearsome enemy in the entire series. McTavish is fantastic in the role and he easily could have run his own show.

Finally, we have Mr. Starr (Pip Torrens), the proverbial villain you love to hate. Starr is one of the leaders of the Grail and a truly despicable man… and the show delights in traumatizing him physically and psychologically. Starr, unlike the Saint of Killers, is not sympathetic in any way, and so it’s always satisfying to watch him suffer. Jesse is targeted by Starr because he wants to use his power to further his plans, but Jesse never stays under Starr’s thumb for long.

The TV show cuts out the worst aspects of the comic

As wild as preacher is that the TV series has drastically reduced the worst aspects of the comic. Ennis, the author of the comic series that inspired the show, tends to put the most depraved things he can think of into his stories. He did the same in The boys Comic, and therefore this series and preacher were made more palatable by cutting these parts out of the respective adaptations.

preacher exceeds the limits of its TV-MA rating, even without the things left out in the comic. But without those omissions, preacher would not have been suitable for a larger audience than the comic book ever could have. Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg ultimately made the right decision with this step.

Regard preacher To Netflix.
