Online banking consortium reduces the hassle of moving in Japan

Japan’s 62 regional banks will launch a central online service that will allow users to complete all formalities related to their move.

According to the Regional Banks Association of Japan, all of its member banks plan to launch the free service called “Life Infrastructure Platform” in February 2025.

Using the platform, users can first submit notifications of move-in and move-out to the relevant municipalities and change addresses in their bank accounts and in the residents’ register for direct debit. My Number cards are used for identification.

In February 2026, the scope of the service is to be expanded to include procedures for interrupting and resuming electricity and gas supplies. In the longer term, procedures related to raising children, marriage, birth, death and inheritance are also to be covered.

The aim of the initiative is to make it unnecessary to visit numerous counters and municipal and bank websites when moving. Since the plans were presented last September, the regional banking association has drawn up a concrete plan.

It envisages the participation of local governments and a broad range of private companies, including other banks, securities firms, insurers, credit card issuers and infrastructure developers.
