Bandai Namco and Amazon Game Studios have announced that their collaborative online RPG Blue Protocol will be shut down in Japan and its western release has been cancelled entirely. Japanese users have until January 18, 2025 to continue playing the game, after which it will be taken offline.

In a post on Blue Protocol’s website, the development team explained that they were trying to create an experience that would make everyone feel like the main character of an anime, but “we came to the conclusion that it will not be possible to provide a service that will satisfy all of you.”

Blue Protocol is now one of the few games we actually played before release that never sees the light of day. We played the western version over a year ago at a preview event and were convinced it could give Genshin Impact a run for its money. “With satisfying combat and plenty of large worlds to explore and loot, Genshin Impact is one to watch out for next year. Blue Protocol awaits in 2024, shaping up to be a real contender in the online space after an already successful launch in Japan.” Now we’ll never know if it could have toppled the Hoyoverse heavyweight.
