Owner of the power plant site at Avon Lake commissions commercial real estate company to redevelop

AVON LAKE, Ohio – The former Avon Lake Power Plant will soon be for sale as part of the next step in a future redevelopment.

The Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group has hired commercial real estate firm Avison Young to sell the 43-acre lake property, according to an announcement Thursday.

This happened just weeks after two of the power plant’s boilers imploded in a controlled explosion.

Once listed, the land will be available for mixed development as part of the Avon Lake Power Station construction and redevelopment initiative to provide lakefront access.

Avison Young plans to solicit offers from potential buyers with the goal of closing a purchase agreement later this year, the press release said.

The power plant has been closed since 2022, creating a rare opportunity to redevelop a large parcel of land in the Cleveland area on Lake Erie. Ideas for the property include a new beach, amphitheater-style seating overlooking Lake Erie, offices and retail.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform and develop 40 acres on Lake Erie,” Scott Reschly, president of the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group, said in a statement.

“It supports national efforts to not only be better stewards of our environment, but also to maximize the potential of our urban, suburban and rural spaces.”

Don Lydon will represent the project in Avison Young’s Cleveland office, while Richard Shields and Judson Martin will represent it from the firm’s Chicago office, the press release said.

The demolition and renovation work is underway and is scheduled to be completed by mid-2025.
