Fort Worth residents once again proved they are a city of readers by logging more than 4.5 million minutes of reading in the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge.

This year’s challenge ran from June 1 to August 10. The final tally shows that 8,608 registered participants read for 4,537,912 minutes. More than 2,300 people completed the challenge – 1,000 minutes of reading time for adults and 500 minutes for children.

“I’m thrilled that Fort Worth residents read over 4.5 million minutes this summer as part of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge,” said Mayor Mattie Parker. “I’m incredibly proud of the time readers of all ages invested to make this possible. Keep reading — read for pleasure, discovery, or simply whatever motivates you to keep learning all year long.”

The challenge may be over, but Fort Worth readers can still track their reading in Beanstack, find reading recommendations, explore fun activities, and use a variety of resources available at libraries that they can borrow and take home.

Don’t stop now

Families with young children are invited to weekly storytimes and the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, designed to help young learners gain literacy skills before they start school. The Kinder Prep program offers weekly lessons that simulate what children will experience in the classroom in a fun and supportive environment.

Adults are encouraged to explore a variety of Fort Worth Public Library Book clubs throughout the city, some focusing on specific genres. Stay at Home Book Clublaunched during the pandemic, is aimed at busy readers who prefer e-books and discussions on Facebook.
