An unidentified suspect broke into an occupied home in the 800 block of Barron Avenue late Tuesday around 10 p.m. and stole several pieces of jewelry, Palo Alto police said in a statement.

The suspect, who may have entered the home through an unlocked door, had no contact with the resident, a woman in her 90s, and was asleep during the incident, according to police. She was awakened by a call from her alarm company asking her about activating her alarm system.

The victim’s daughter, who lives nearby, found her mother’s door open when she went to check on her and then notified the police, the statement said.

The suspect rummaged through drawers in several rooms, the statement said.

Police do not believe the incident is connected to another burglary of an occupied home that occurred on University Avenue on July 27.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the police’s 24-hour emergency line at (650) 329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to [email protected] or texted or voicemailed to (650) 383-8984.
