Passenger Adriano Assis was late for coffee and missed the boarding call for the Voepass Linhas Aereas flight, which crashed to the ground about 89 kilometers from its final destination at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo. Therefore, the total number of victims was revised from 62 to 61 (57 passengers and 4 crew members).

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ordered three days of national mourning “in memory of the 61 victims of the tragic plane crash” after it was confirmed that there were no survivors.

The ATR-72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft had left Cascavel, in the state of Paraná, but went into a downward spiral in a densely populated area in the city of Vinhedo, in the state of Sao Paulo. It could easily have hit one of the houses a few meters from the crash site.

The survivor got into an argument with the flight crew because he was denied boarding after hours. When he heard the news, he was still at the airport waiting for his next flight and ended up hugging the man with whom he had had a heated argument an hour earlier. “He did his job and saved my life,” the survivor told a local television crew.

Meanwhile, Nathalie Cicari, a neighbor of the crash site, said she only had time to duck and pray. “It was terrible. I was eating lunch when I heard a very loud noise, very close to me. I thought it was a drone, but it was much higher.”

“I went out onto the balcony and saw the drone spinning around. Within seconds I realized that this was not a normal movement for an aircraft. I only had time to duck and pray like they do in the movies. Then I heard the tremendous sound of the crash,” she added.
