Patagonia’s marine potential in the spotlight at Blue Economy Days

The Chamber of Industry of Patagonia (CIMA Patagonia) will host the first Blue Economy Days in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, from September 4 to 6. This event is an important step in the exploitation of Patagonia’s vast marine resources as Argentina begins to explore its oceanic potential. With the participation of international and national experts, the event aims to promote sustainable industrial development in this ecologically sensitive region and strengthen cooperation between industry, academia and environmental protection.

Historically, Argentina has focused mainly on industrial and agricultural activities, while few small industries and companies have been linked to the sea. This is particularly surprising since Argentina has one of the largest continental shelves in the world. Patagonia is known for its rich marine biodiversity, its opportunities for ecotourism and its proximity to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. The Valdés Peninsula in particular attracts thousands of tourists each year for whale watching. Southern right whales migrate to this region from June to December to mate and give birth, often coming close to the coast.

Unique ecological properties

The country is striving to restore its legal and economic stability, positioning itself as one of South America’s most promising nations. The region is rich in energy resources and minerals, both onshore and offshore, and has a robust agricultural and agro-industrial sector. This creates the conditions for natural industrial development in Patagonia. However, given the region’s unique ecological characteristics and its sensitivity to environmental change, it is vital that industrial growth occurs in close cooperation with scientific research and a strong commitment to environmental protection.

CIMA is hosting the Blue Economy Days in partnership with the German-South American marine technology manufacturer Mariscope. The aim of the event is to promote dialogue and exchange between all stakeholders interested in the Blue Economy. Although the initiative is supported by a private organization, it is intended to involve participants from various sectors, including private companies, industry representatives, academics, NGOs and government organizations. The event will feature both international and national speakers who will provide insights into current and future developments, investment opportunities, policy plans, projects and financing options for both large companies and small and medium-sized enterprises.

More details about the event can be found here. For those unable to travel to Patagonia, the event will be available via online streaming.
