Power outage at Gio’s Mobile Homes due to transformer fire

EL-CENTRO — A transformer fire at Gio’s Mobile Home Estates in El Centro late Saturday night, Aug. 10, caused a power outage that eventually affected all 271 homes in the community, according to a news release from the city of El Centro.

An initial power outage affecting 16 homes was made worse when an attempt by a privately contracted troubleshooter to repair the transformer inadvertently caused a complete power outage in the trailer park, the release said.

Imperial Irrigation District technicians and mobile home park representatives responded quickly to the incident and, after a thorough assessment, concluded that extensive repairs were necessary to fully restore power, the news release said.

The owner of Gio’s has reserved about 170 hotel rooms for residents affected by the power outage and has been working since Saturday evening to secure more. The power outage is expected to last several days.
