Power outage in Austin: Austin ISD central office closed

The Austin Independent School District says its headquarters will be closed today (8/22) due to last night’s power outage that left thousands without electricity on the hottest day of the year.

The entire building, located at 4000 S. I-35 Frontage Road, is out of power and its backup generator has been unable to provide an alternative power source, officials say. Badge issuance and employee orientation are being postponed.

AISD asks families to come to their campus for enrollment assistance. In-person enrollment assistance will be offered on school buses in the main office parking lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Calls to the district main number or the enrollment support hotline cannot be answered at this time.

The background story

Thousands of Austin residents were without power Wednesday evening.

On August 21, Austin Energy experienced a power outage beginning at approximately 5 p.m., affecting approximately 8,000 customers in East Austin.

A spokesman for Austin Energy said there were problems at one of its substations and that it is still investigating what caused the substation to cut power to thousands of residents.

Austin Energy reported that power was restored shortly before 9 p.m.
