Power outages in southeast Michigan: 73,000 DTE customers still in the dark

After severe storms left hundreds of thousands of people in southeast Michigan without power on Tuesday, emergency crews have been working for days to restore power.

As of 6:30 a.m., over 73,000 DTE customers were still without power, while Consumers Energy reported that over 40,000 of its customers were without power.

These outages occurred after severe thunderstorms that tore down power lines and masts.

Utilities have deployed hundreds of crews, including DTE linemen from other states, to restore power. At one point, more than 300,000 customers were without power after the storm.

DTE hopes to have power restored to 90 percent of customers who lost power by the end of Thursday.

What to do if you see a fallen cable:

If an emergency occurs, such as a fire or you see a power line down on an unoccupied car, call 911 first and then call your energy provider. DTE Energy can be reached at 800-477-4747. Consumers Energy can be reached at 800-477-5050.

In non-emergency cases, you can report the transfer to DTE online here.

Stay at least 20 feet away from power lines. Do not touch power lines or allow any object to touch them. Do not drive over fallen power lines. Also, do not touch anything that is touching the power line, such as a fence or a puddle.

Also keep pets and children away from the cables.

If you are in your vehicle and a cable falls on it, DTE advises staying inside and calling 911.

However, if you must exit the vehicle, DTE recommends removing loose clothing and exiting without touching the frame. Jump with your feet together to avoid touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Do not remove your feet until you are at least 20 feet away from the vehicle.
