Power outage? Lizards and squirrels are to blame: Discom

Hyderabad: The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) faces the particular problem of Power outagesAnd it has nothing to do with persistent rain, protruding branches or dangling wires.
14% of power outages are caused by small Reptiles And Mammals According to a study, the power utility is at its wits’ end in various parts of the state. TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui has now found a solution to the problem.
Officials said reptiles such as lizards and iguanas and mammals such as squirrels and other small animals such as cats and birds often get killed by electric shock when they come into contact with live wires (metal terminals) and earthing points (metal terminals) on fuses and insulators of horn sections, live wires and earthing points on transformers, circuit breakers and parts of other electrical equipment. “This often leads to tripping of feeder wires and hence interruptions in power supply,” said an official.
Currently, metal clamps are used in horn gap fuses and breakers, which are now being replaced by specially designed silicone clamps made of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP). “These clamps are non-conductive, so reptiles do not get an electric shock even if they come into contact with them,” said a senior official.
Initially, around 3,000 FRP silicon clamps will be installed in areas with high tree density and reptile population. “This is expected to not only benefit reptiles and mammals but also reduce the number of power outages,” Faruqui added.
