Power Squeeze overtakes Candied and wins Alabama

With department head Thorpedo Anna After competing against stallions in the Travers Stakes (G1) on August 24, the eight three-year-old fillies gathered in the Alabama Stakes (G1) on August 17 in Saratoga Racetrack had the chance to step out of her shadow.

Force Squeeze a chestnut-brown three-year-old daughter of Union Rags did just that, coming up from seventh place and Candied on the wire and win by a nose length with a nod of the head.

Lea Farms’ Power Squeeze has now won six of her last eight starts, including the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). Her only losses during that time came when she finished a well-beaten sixth behind Thorpedo Anna in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and then finished third behind the division leader in the Acorn Stakes (G1).

“She’s a fighter and I liked the way she did today,” said winning rider Javier Castellano. “She’s a very down-to-earth horse. I knew it was a hot pace.”

Just bask came from last place to third place. The finishing time for 1 1/4 miles on the dirt track was 2:04.35.
