Pro-life organization publishes detailed report on the importance of mail-in abortion regulations

CV NEWS FEED // Americans United for Life (AUL), a leading pro-life advocacy group, has released a report on the significance of federal regulations regulating mail-in abortions that the current administration wants to eliminate.

According to AUL, the report provides “an overview and legislative history of federal mail-in abortion regulations” and addresses misconceptions about those regulations.

The report was written by trial attorney Carolyn McDonnell and released on August 26.

McDonnell explains that 18 USC §§ 1461-1462, part of the Comstock Act, prohibits the U.S. Postal Service from shipping abortifacients. Express carriers, shipping companies, or interactive computer services are also prohibited from shipping abortifacients.

In addition, McDonnell’s report shows “that failure to enforce these laws has not resulted in repeal, that repeal of these laws would have adverse public policy effects, and that the laws do not prohibit the shipment of surgical instruments and drugs for purposes other than abortion,” the AUL says.

Steven Aden, Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel of AUL, stated:

Over 60% of abortions in America today are performed using chemical abortion pills. Federal law prohibits ordering chemical abortions through the mail. With her typical precision and thoroughness, AUL’s Carolyn McDonnell has shown that these life-saving laws are based on the health and safety of patients and remain valid and fully enforceable.

The AUL’s mission is to “advance the human right to life in culture, law, and policy” by “empowering advocates and legislators with facts and policies that change hearts and minds and protect human life.”
