Get comfortable, because there’s a silent reading party happening in Old Town North later this month.
The realm of fantasy is the destination for participants in the latest adventure between Old Town Books (130 S. Royal Street) and Hotel AKA Alexandria (625 First Street). From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 24, you can finally find the peace and quiet you need to move the bookmark and find out who committed the crime in this Agatha Christie mystery.
Ally Kirkpatrick, the owner of Old Town Books, was inspired after staying at the hotel for a night.
“As a mother of three young children and small business owner, I was on the verge of burnout at the end of the school year,” Kirkpatrick wrote on her blog. “Unfortunately, my main coping mechanism, reading, just wasn’t working anymore. I tried in vain to pick up a new book, but all I could do was scroll on my phone. For a bookworm like me, losing touch with my main method of relaxing and refocusing was a crisis!”
Kirkpatrick said the hotel’s modern aesthetic, which includes “a chic bar, rooftop terrace and cute cafe,” provides a great setting for reading.
It costs $5 to participate and Kirkpatrick said her newsletter subscribers get first dibs.
The AKA Alexandria hotel is promoting the event as a reading retreat and is offering guests a $50 gift card to Old Town Books.
“To enhance your experience, enjoy a unique, literary-inspired mocktail or cocktail from a.lounge, specially designed to complement your reading experience,” says the AKA Alexandria hotel website. “Enjoy perfect spaces to immerse yourself in a book, whether it’s with a steaming cup of coffee at A.Cafe, sunbathing on our scenic terrace, sipping a beverage at a.lounge, or in the tranquil comfort of your guest room.”
